Shortly before his scheduled World Series Game 1 start, Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez’s father died Tuesday in the Dominican Republic at the age of 63, according to the Associated Press.

According to the report, Volquez was not immediately made aware of the passing of his father, who had been dealing with heart disease. He took the mound as scheduled just after 8 p.m. ET, and pitched a perfect first inning.

After his start, he met his family in the Royals clubhouse and was given the news. The information was withheld at the request of Volquez’s wife, according to the game broadcast.

Volquez finished his start after six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He did not earn a decision.
