The Mets have placed third baseman Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 intercostal strain, the team announced Saturday.

To take his place, New York agreed to terms with outfielder Justin Ruggiano, who was recently released by the Rangers.

Reyes, 33, was sent to the hospital with the injury after New York split a doubleheader with the Cardinals on Tuesday. Before the ailment, Reyes was hitting .239 with three home runs, four doubles, two triples and three stolen bases in 16 games with the Mets.

On June 25, Reyes re-joined the club after playing five seasons away from New York. He was released by the Rockies on June 23 after serving a 52-game suspension for a domestic violence incident, and signed with the Mets two days later.
