Recently hired as coach by the New York Knicks, Derek Fisher will also head up the franchise's summer league team in Las Vegas, the Knicks announced on Thursday.

It's a rarity for a team's regular coach to also serve as coach for the summer league. But Knicks president Phil Jackson and Fisher likely decided it'd be in the team's best interest for Fisher to do so, given that he has no previous coaching experience.

The Nets did the same last year with Jason Kidd, who also had no previous coaching experience before assuming the reigns for Brooklyn.

New York's summer league roster features a current Knicks player in Tim Hardaway Jr. and several players who appeared for the Knicks in 2013-14, including Shannon Brown, Cole Aldrich and Jeremy Tyler. Draft picks Cleanthony Early and Thanasis Antetokounmpo and recent trade acquisition Shane Larkin will also play in the summer league.

The Las Vegas summer league runs from July 11-21.
