Toronto Raptors forward Anthony Bennett was assigned to the NBA Development League’s Raptors 905 at his request Sunday.

Bennett is the first former No. 1 overall pick to be sent to the D-League. He has played only 48 minutes in nine games for the Raptors, and asked for the assignment to see more playing time. He will play for 905 Sunday afternoon then rejoin the Raptors for their game Sunday night.

“Anthony came to us asking to use this double-header as an opportunity work on his game,” Raptors vice president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “This is an example of how we envisioned using our D-League team to improve our players.”

Bennett has played for three teams since being drafted first in the 2013 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He spent one season each in Cleveland and Minnesota before joining the Raptors in September.
