Leave it to the Kings to find new and unusual ways to draw the ire of the NBA league office.
The NBA announced Monday that Kings guard Aaron Brooks has been fined $25,000 for "throwing his mouthpiece into the stands" immediately following a 104-102 loss to the Jazz at Energy Solutions Arena on Friday.
The toss came after a wild endgame sequence. With less than 15 seconds to play, Brooks lost the ball on a drive and was incensed that he didn't earn a foul call on Jazz guard Jamaal Tinsley, swinging his arms angrily as Utah took a timeout. On the ensuing possession, Jazz guard Gordon Hayward hit what proved to be the game-winning jumper with 4.5 seconds remaining. Kings forward James Johnson rushed the ball upcourt but missed a game-tying attempt at the buzzer; Brooks, standing near the three-point line, immediately ripped out his mouthguard and flung it into the sideline stands. You can see the toss at the 2:14 mark of the video above.
Brooks is the third member of the Kings to face league discipline this month. Kings center DeMarcus Cousins was suspended for two games for a post-game incident with Spurs broadcaster Sean Elliott. Kings rookie forward Thomas Robinson was suspended two games for throwing an elbow to the throat of Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko. Video via YouTube user MsJonaVideo.
