The Buffalo Bills have claimed linebacker IK Enemkpali on waivers after he was released by the New York Jets for punching Geno Smith in the face, the team announced Wednesday.

Jets coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday that Enemkpali punched Smith in the face during a dispute in the locker room, breaking Smith’s jaw in two places. Bowles described the blow as a “sucker punch.” Smith will undergo surgery and be out for six to 10 weeks.

Multiple reports Tuesday suggested that the fight broke out because Enemkpali believed Smith owed him $600 for a plane ticket.

Enemkpali, who was drafted by the Jets while current Bills head coach Rex Ryan was the coach there, is entering his second season in the NFL. He played sparingly as a rookie, primarily on special teams.
