Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he is planning to play Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, who remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol, according to ESPN's David Newton.

Kuechly missed Thursday's practice and has been out since suffering the injury during the team's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the video below, Kuechly can be seen hitting Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon with the crown of his helmet and immediately staggering to the ground.

Kuechly, a two-time Pro Bowler, was the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 since being drafted by the Panthers in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft out of Boston College.

Before the season, he signed a five-year, $62 million contract.
