The New England Patriots are set to sign veteran running back Steven Jackson to a one-year deal, reports Josina Anderson of ESPN.

Jackson announced his return to the NFL in a tweet on Monday.

The Patriots have struggled with injuries at the running back position this season and will sign Jackson in an attempt to strengthen their backfield.

According to ESPN, Jackson met with New England on Wednesday and worked out with the team the next day.

Jackson was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams. He spent nine seasons with St. Louis before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 2013. The Falcons released the running back in February.

The Patriots (12–2) will take on the New York Jets (9–5) on Sunday.
