New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson sustained a broken lower leg in Sunday’s loss to the Bills and will likely need surgery, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Sunday.

Wilkerson’s right leg got caught under a pile of tacklers late in the game, and he was able to put no weight on it afterwards. He was helped off the field, carted to the locker room, and would not return.

The 26-year-old was named to his first Pro Bowl in December after recording a career-high 12 sacks. He is in the final year of his contract, and had put negotiations on hold with the team until the end of the season.

New York fell to the Bills in Buffalo, 22–17, and were eliminated from playoff contention.
