NFL rules analyst Mike Carey is out at CBS.

The New York Daily News first reported that Carey, a retired NFL referee, will not return to CBS’s broadcasts next season. SI.com confirmed the news Saturday.

Carey worked for the network for the past two seasons after 24 years as an NFL official. He was the live on-air resource for controversial calls and replay reviews and frequently drew public scrutiny and frustration for his opinions and speculation on plays.

The Daily Newsreported it was “highly unlikely” CBS hires another retired official to replace Carey next season.
