TSN to stop airing tweets during live broadcasts
TSN says it will no longer air public tweets during live coverage after the network showed a post (warning: some might find language inappropriate) from a viewer about Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul and defenseman Dion Phaneuf’s wife during a NHL trade deadline show on Monday.
TSN spokesman Greg McIsaac declined comment about how the tweet made it on air in the first place, instead saying “going forward TSN will not be airing public tweets during our live broadcasts," according to the Canadian Press.
The network apologized to Lupul, Phaneuf and Phaneuf's wife, actress Elisha Cuthbert, after TSN was threatened with legal action.
TSN says there was no basis for the false allegation made in this tweet and “regrets any embarrassment this unfortunate incident has caused to them.”
“I can tell you in the case of the three of them, Joffrey, Dion and his wife Elisha, they were humiliated, they were embarrassed, they were outraged that this could have happened," said Peter Gall, who represents Phaneuf, Cuthbert and Lupul. “That it had gone beyond somebody sitting in his basement... that it could go from that to being on your television screen for everybody to see. It was quite shocking and devastating."
The individual who sent the tweet deleted the post. Gall sent a letter to the person demanding an apology and also threatening legal action.
