Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon provided a one-two punch at the end of the first period against the Canadiens on Saturday, scoring twice in 13 seconds to extend Colorado’s lead to 3–0.

MacKinnon’s first goal came after a face-off, with him ending up alone in the slot and lifting a wrister over Mike Condon. The 20-year-old’s second was generated on an odd-man rush, when Mikhail Grigorenko found MacKinnon streaking towards the goal and the former Calder Trophy winner’s hands did the rest.

The two goals marked the quickest pair against Montreal since February 2004, when Florida’s Viktor Kozlov scored twice in seven seconds.

MacKinnon now leads Colorado in goals with eight. The Avalanche would go on to win the game 6–1, handing the Canadiens only their third loss of the season.
