COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (AP) — Colorado's Kevin Doyle scored twice to lead the Rapids over San Jose 2-1 on Thursday, taking the lead in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield and eliminating the Earthquakes from playoff contention.

Colorado won its third in a row to surpass Dallas in the standings. The Rapids visit Portland on Saturday and host Houston to finish the season the following week.

Doyle opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a diving header to finish Marc Burch's cross.

San Jose talisman Chris Wondolowski equalized with a penalty in the 57th.

Doyle netted his own spot kick in the 73rd for what proved to be the winning goal.

It was the Rapids' first victory over San Jose since 2011.
