Iowa State promotes Tom Manning to offensive coordinator

AMES, Iowa (AP) Just 10 years after starting his career as a high school assistant coach, Tom Manning will get a crack at running Big 12 offense.

Cyclones coach Matt Campbell announced Tuesday that Manning, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant under Campbell at Toledo, has been promoted to offensive coordinator.

Manning and Campbell were teammates for a season at Division III powerhouse Mount Union, with Manning earning a pair of all-league honors at left tackle. Manning later coached at Jackson High in Massillon, Ohio and at Mount Union for a season before joining Campbell at Toledo.

Manning then came with Campbell as an offensive line coach when he was hired by Iowa State last month.

Manning will also coach Iowa State's linemen next season. His promotion fills one of the last pieces on Campbell's new staff. The first-year coach still has yet to hire a defensive coordinator.

Iowa State went 3-9 last season under Paul Rhoads, who was fired in November after seven years in Ames.

Though Manning's first shot as a coordinator will be in the pass-heavy Big 12, don't expect the Cyclones to air it out as much as it did at times under former coordinator Mark Mangino.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard made it clear when he hired Campbell that he was looking for a run-first coach.

Toledo was 26th nationally with 214 yards rushing a game this season in 11 games under Campbell, who was 9-2 before leaving prior to the Rockets bowl game against Temple next week.
