Utah State's Josh Heupel to become Missouri offensive coordinator
Utah State associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel will be Missouri’s new offensive coordinator, according to a source.
Heupel joins the staff of Tigers head coach Barry Odom, who was promoted from defensive coordinator on Dec. 3. Heupel spent the past season at Utah State after working at Oklahoma for nine seasons. He coached the Sooners’ quarterbacks from 2006–10 and became co-offensive coordinator and play-caller in ’11.
Under Heupel’s tutelage, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford won the Heisman Trophy in 2008. The Sooners ranked in the FBS’s top 20 in scoring offense in three of Heupel’s four seasons calling plays.
Prior to Oklahoma, Heupel was the tight ends coach at Arizona for a season and a graduate assistant for the Sooners from 2003–04. The Aberdeen, S.D., native was also a beloved quarterback for Oklahoma who on the field led coach Bob Stoops to his only national championship in ’00. Heupel was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy that season.
Odom took over as head coach of Missouri after former coach Gary Pinkel announced he would retire at the end of the year due to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Pinkel coached the Tigers for 15 seasons, finishing as the winningest coach in program history with a 118–73 record. He won the SEC’s East Division in 2013 and ’14.
Missouri went 5–7 this season with an offense that ranked last in the SEC in yards per game (280.08) and points per game (13.58).
