Second-Year Thoughts

Everybody will be scouring the results to tonight's NBA Draft trying to slot Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Hasheem Thabeet, et al on their fantasy draft boards based on which teams they land with. However since there's usually a huge leap in value between a player's rookie and sophomore seasons in the NBA, we're looking back at last season's selections who are going to impact the upcoming season. There are still a bunch of moves to be made that will surely affect the rankings but here's a very early look at the players entering their sophomore seasons in 2009-10 and how they rank based on projected fantasy value:

1. Russell Westbrook, PG, Thunder
2. Derrick Rose, PG, Bulls
3. Eric Gordon, SG, Clippers
4. Michael Beasley, SF, Heat
5. O.J. Mayo, SG, Grizzlies
6. Brook Lopez, C, Nets
7. D.J. Augustin, PG, Bobcats
8. Jason Thompson, Kings
9. Mario Chalmers, PG, Heat
10. Joe Alexander, SF, Bucks
11. Kevin Love, PF, Timberwolves
12. Anthony Randolph, Warriors
13. Brandon Rush, SG, Pacers
14. Marreese Speights, PF, 76ers
15. Courtney Lee, SG, Magic
16. Luc Mbah a Moute, PF, Bucks
17. Mike Taylor, PG, Clippers

Sweet Sounds

As a huge music and sports fan I've always been quite curious when the two worlds collide. Among my vast collection of curious tracks are selections from athletes like the late Wayman Tisdale, Jewelz (a.k.a. A.I.), Shaq Fu, Detroit Lions players Mel Farr and Lem Barney (singing backup on Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On"), and even no-hit wonder Darryl Strawberry's foray into a musical career with "Chocolate Strawberry." Now there's a new athletic group to hit the music scene, the heavy metal band known as Free Reign. Comprised of Cowboys offensive linemen Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis, Cory Procter (and guitarist Justin Chapman), FR has a debut album on Riot Entertainment scheduled for fall release and this Saturday they're playing a gig at the House of Blues in Dallas. They're a lot better than I expected they'd be. Especially if you're a hard music fan, check them out for yourselves.

Must See TV

For years ESPN's Baseball Tonight has been the only nightly outlet for fantasy baseball players everywhere because of it's blanket coverage of the days events. However the glitz and gimmickry (not to mention some of the commentators) rub some viewers the wrong way. For three months now I've begun nearly every day by tuning into Quick Pitch on the MLB Network. It's a highlight show that features intelligent analysis and highlights of the past night's games. On those evenings that you can't follow your teams and want more coverage than a recap or boxscore off the Web or in a newspaper, it's required watching.

And finally...

You know you've always wanted to do this.
