WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The stakes will be high when Chaminade-Madonna visits Cardinal Newman on Friday night in a rematch of last season’s Florida high school football state championship game.

The Lions and Crusaders will renew their rivalry for the first time since Cardinal Newman delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 season, defeating the four-time defending state champions from Chaminade-Madonna 17-14 in the FHSAA Class 1A championship game. The victory gave the Crusaders their first football state championship in school history.

FOURTH QUARTER — Chaminade-Madonna 20, Cardinal Newman 7

Newman forced to punt on fourth and long. Lions take over on their own 43.

A couple of penalties, and suddenly Newman is facing a second and 30. They're headed in the wrong direction here.

The Crusaders will start on their own 47. They're still very much alive in this game.

Chaminade opens the third quarter with an incompletion on a third and 7 deep in their own territory, and Newmand should get decent field position still trying to come from behind in this game.

THIRD QUARTER — Chaminade-Madonna 20, Cardinal Newman 7

And the third quarter ends where it started with the Lions still leading 20-7.

On fourth down, Newman fakes a play up the middle before Martinez headed right with the ball. He flipped to a receiver going back around the left end on a reverse, and for a moment it looked like it would be successful. But Chaminade's defenders closed quickly, and stopped the play to turn the ball over on downs back to the Lions.

Timeout to talk about it.

And it's going to be fourth and goal from there.

And it's Sumpter again down to about the four on a counter play inside.

Sumpter takes it down to about the 7. Second and goal.

Penalties have been costly, and the Crusaders are backed up to the 8.

Martinez with a run down to about the 17, and then Sumpter takes it down to the 3 on the next play. Crusaders clawing its way back into this.

Cardinal Newman with a first down Chaminade's 38.

Cardinal Newman approaching midfield.

A long pass is incomplete, and Newman will get another chance to cut into this lead.

Chaminade with a couple of penalties after approaching midfield. They're facing a third and 35.

On a fourth and 3 deep in Chaminade territory, Martinez keeps the ball on a read option. He goes around the right end, but it is met behind the line of scrimmage. Great opportunity for Newman, but they come up empty.

On a broken play, Martinez manages to get the right edge where he finds a lot of daylight and carries it all the way down the Lions' 20.

Newman going to start around its own 22.

And they're set to go in the second half.

HALFTIME — Chaminade-Madonna 20, Cardinal Newman 7

And that's where the first half ends. After a blazing start, Chaminade-Madonna has cooled off, and Cardinal Newman has shown some life. They'll get the ball first in the second half.

It's a great punt that rolls all the way down to Newman's 5. So no two-for-one opportunity here. Now, they just need to avoid a mistake.

Under a minute to play in the first half, and Chaminade is facing a fourth down deep in their own territory. The Lions have cooled off after that hot start, and Newman has a chance to possibly get a two for one here as they'll get the ball first in the second half.

Chaminade-Madonna sets up around its 28.

That quarterback is Pedro Martinez, and on fourth and goal, he powers it up the middle to get the Crusaders on the board. That was a great response, and they're back in this thing for now.

No where to go with the ball on the pass play, and the QB is forced to throw it out of the back of the end zone. Newman lining up to go for it, and the quarterback gets Chaminade to jump off. Down to about the 2.

QB scramble down to around the 5 where it will be third and goal.

Janarro Sumpter carries it down to the Lions' 9 where they Crusader will have a first and goal.

Newman down to the Lions' 34.

And they have updated it now to 20-0.

They're still showing it 19-0 on the livestream, and there was some confusion about whether it was good initially. They said it was 20-0, but we'll make the change if they update us again.

Great return by Newman, and they'll set up shot just in the Lions' 45. They're finally in business here if the offense

Nakia Lambright takes it in from there, and the Lions are up 19-0. The PAT is good.

It's a first down for the Lions by the length of the football. Looks to be first and goal.

A short pass to the left flat is stopped right near the first-down mark. They'll bring the chains out to measure.

Timeout. Game could be hanging in the balance already. If the Lions go up three scores, that's going to be quite the mountain to climb for the Crusaders.

Looks to be third and five from the 15. A pass in the flat doesn't get much so it's fourth down.

And another first down as the Lions are approaching the red zone.

First down via the penalty for the Lions.

Nice scramble by Quinn gets it to a manageable fourth and 2.

Newman stepping up on this set of downs. Chaminade facing a third and 15 near midfield.

FIRST QUARTER — Chaminade-Madonna 7, Cardinal Newman 0

And that's where a one-sided first quarter comes to a close.

Cardinal Newman very sloppy with the penalties early, shooting themselves in the foot on offense and defense. A late hit gives the Lions a first down at the Crusaders' 26.

Already up 13-0, Chaminade-Madonna will start its third drive at its own 32.

Crusaders facing another long third down. Close to 30 yards.

Chaminade-Madonna 13, Cardinal Newman 0

Quinn finds Armani Strong streaking down the left sideline, and lofts a pass over the defense. Strong takes it all the way to the house, and just like that, the Crusaders are facing a two-touchdown deficit. The PAT is no good.

Lions take over at their own 40 after the punt.

Facing a third and long, the Crusaders are unable to move the chains. It's a quick and three and out.

Cardinal Newman will start on its own 20 for its first possession.

Next play, Brady Quinn runs the same sweep, and he barely gets in on fourth and goal. The PAT is good, and the Lions are on the board first on the road.

Bradford on a sweep around right end where they initially call touchdown after a conference, they decide he was short inside the one.

A completion down to the 3 yard line for third and goal.

Chaminade-Madonna QB Brady Quinn with a nifty fake to Bradford. He keeps it right up the middle down to the 10.

Chaminade-Madonna with a first down at Cardinal Newman's 25.

Chaminade-Madonna with a big play down to Cardinal Newman's 45.

Tonight's game could be a preview of another playoff tussle as both teams still rank among the Sunshine State's elite programs. This time, however, the teams are competing as members of Class 2A where Cardinal Newman has fashioned a 5-1 record so far compared to Chaminade-Madonna's 4-2 mark. The difference is negligible on paper, however, as Newman's loss is to a 5-1 West Boca Raton squad that figures to make a deep postseason run, while Chaminade-Madonna has two respectable losses to national powers — Sierra Canyon of California and their rivals from St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale.

The teams’ previous meeting in last year's Class 1A title tilt offered a blueprint for how Cardinal Newman can pull off another victory. The Crusaders got it done with a stout defense, holding the Lions scoreless in the third quarter of the championship game while making just enough plays on both sides of the ball to protect a narrow lead. Newman eventually built a two-score lead for insurance heading into the fourth quarter, and despite a fourth-quarter touchdown by the Lions, the Crusaders were able to hold on for the historic win.

Friday’s rematch provides Chaminade-Madonna an opportunity to avenge that loss, and the Lions will, no doubt, use the disappointment from last December’s championship game loss as motivation. Cardinal Newman, on the other hand, can draw from the confidence of knowing they finally reached the top of the mountain, and a win in this rematch might signal that last year's championship was the beginning of a new chapter in the Crusaders' history rather than a fluky upset.
