High School Jumbotron Freefalls, Breaks to Pieces After Failed Installation (video)

This is why we can't have nice things ...

A new jumbotron scoreboard was being installed in the gym at O'Fallon Township High in Illinois before a harness to help hold the unit in place broke.

The snap sent the jumbotron into a freefall to the gym floor which caused the aparatus to break into pieces and damage the hardwood floor, according to reports from First Alert 4.

The video has since gone viral on TikTok and various platforms.

The scoreboard shatters into pieces once it hits the floor. No injuries were reported.

The school district's superintendent, Dr. Beth Shackelford, told First Alert 4: “Athletic activities and events will continue with adjustments as needed, and we are actively evaluating scheduling and facility options to minimize any disruptions.”

Nevco is the company installing the jumbotron in the video. A representative from the company told First Alert 4 the gym floor is scheduled to be repaired in two to three weeks. A new scoreboard will be issued and installed within the next six to eight weeks. Nevco confirmed the school district is not responsible for any additional costs for repairs to the gym floors or a new scoreboard.

ABOUT O'FALLON TOWNSHIP HIGH

O'Fallon Township is located in O'Fallon, Illinois, just east of St. Louis. The high school enrollment is roughly 2,500 students, which makes it one of the largest public schools in Illinois outside the Chicago area.

The school community definitely embraces athletics. However, the football program hasn't exactly been a juggernaut as of late. The Panthers went 4-5, 2-7 and 4-5, respectively, the last three seasons. The last winning season was 2022, when O'Fallon went 8-2.

O'Fallon Township High School has produced several notable alumni, including Bob Cryder, who played in the NFL; Bernie Fuchs, an illustrator; Conner Hicks, a U.S. Military Academy cadet; Roosevelt Jones, who played in the NBA; Tucker McCann, an NFL player; Andrew Sanchez, a UFC fighter; and Gabby Windey, a former Denver Broncos cheerleader, 2021 Pop Warner Humanitarian Award winner and reality television personality.

GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPS

The most recent athletic success at O'Fallon came by way of the girls soccer team. The program won the 2025 IHSA Class 3A state championship, defeating Naperville North 1-0 in extra time.

It marked the program's third state title in the last five seasons.

It's the school's first state title crowning in any sport since the girls basketball program won the 2023 IHSA Class 4A girls basketball state championship, defeating Benet Academy 62-57,
