Welcome to Magnolia Gridiron: Sunday Rewind, High School On SI's new weekly look at the biggest stories, most memorable performances and most important developments in Mississippi high school football.

Every Sunday, we'll go beyond the final scores to revisit the games that mattered, celebrate the athletes who made headlines and examine the results shaping the state's championship races.

And what a weekend to launch the series.

Three Class 7A contenders survived games decided by a single possession. One private-school showdown produced an almost unbelievable 126 combined points. An unbeaten team on the Gulf Coast surrendered 50 points and still found a way to win.

Meanwhile, another undefeated team relied on defense rather than offense to remain perfect.

Here are the biggest stories from Mississippi high school football during the weekend of October 16-17.

Petal Does It Again: Panthers Stun No. 5 Brandon, 35-34

Apparently, Petal doesn't believe in winning comfortably.

The Panthers have made a habit of producing dramatic finishes this season, and Friday's 35-34 victory over Brandon might have been their biggest statement yet.

Entering the game ranked No. 8 in the High School On SI Mississippi Top 25, Petal welcomed the fifth-ranked Bulldogs for a critical Class 7A Region 3 showdown.

Brandon led 34-28 entering the fourth quarter, but Petal moved in front on a 2-yard touchdown run by Acely Brown and a successful extra-point kick by Henry Haydel.

Brown finished with three touchdown runs, including a 33-yard burst in the third quarter. The Panthers also got a 9-yard touchdown run from Chavez Walker and Caiden Belton completed a 40-yard TD pass to Josh Crawford.

Tyson Robinson led Brandon with a pair of touchdown runs and a two-point conversion run.

The Panthers improved to 7-1, while Brandon fell to 5-2.

The result continued an extraordinary stretch of close games for Petal. Earlier this season, the Panthers escaped West Jones 49-45 and survived several other contests decided by four points or fewer.

Their only defeat came against Oak Grove, which edged Petal 29-28 in overtime on October 8.

That means Petal's last three games have been decided by a combined six points.

The Panthers have emerged from that stretch with two victories and a legitimate argument for moving back toward the top five in the state rankings.

126 Points! Washington Academy Survives Marshall Academy, 64-62

Forget defense. This was an offensive free-for-all.

Washington Academy and Marshall Academy combined for an astonishing 126 points Friday night, with the Generals escaping with a 64-62 victory.

The teams averaged nearly 16 points per quarter apiece in one of the highest-scoring games of the Mississippi high school football weekend.

Washington's 64 points represented a season high, while Marshall Academy's 62 were also its highest total of the season.

The Generals improved to 6-3 with the victory, continuing a stretch in which they've won six of their last eight games.

Marshall Academy fell to 2-7 despite producing an offensive performance that would ordinarily be more than enough to win.

Quarterback Charles Poole threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots.

The result also illustrated the extraordinary scoring potential of eight-man football, where open space and explosive plays can turn ordinary possessions into touchdowns in a matter of seconds.

For Marshall Academy, scoring 62 points and losing by two might be one of the most frustrating results imaginable.

For Washington, it was a victory the Generals won't soon forget.

D'Iberville Wins a 105-Point Gulf Coast Shootout, Remains Unbeaten

If Washington Academy's 126-point game wasn't enough offense, the Mississippi Gulf Coast delivered another spectacular shootout.

Fourth-ranked D'Iberville survived St. Martin 55-50 Friday night in a Class 7A matchup that featured 105 combined points.

The Warriors improved to 8-0, while St. Martin fell to 6-2.

D'Iberville entered the contest having allowed just 21 points in its previous two games, including a 35-14 victory over Ocean Springs and a 45-7 rout of West Harrison.

St. Martin nearly matched that two-game defensive total by itself.

But the Warriors' offense delivered enough firepower to keep their perfect season intact.

D'Iberville entered the week ranked No. 4 in the High School On SI Mississippi Top 25, and surviving a serious challenge from a talented St. Martin squad should strengthen its position among the state's championship contenders.

The Warriors have now scored at least 35 points in each of their last three games.

Oak Grove Escapes Meridian, 21-20, Setting Up Huge Brandon Showdown

While Petal was edging Brandon by one point, another Class 7A Region 3 contender was surviving an equally tense finish.

No. 7 Oak Grove held off Meridian 21-20 Friday night, improving to 6-1 and keeping pace in one of Mississippi's most competitive regions.

The Warriors entered the game riding the momentum of their 29-28 overtime victory over Petal the previous week.

Now they've won consecutive games by a combined two points.

Oak Grove has also demonstrated the ability to win high-scoring contests, having defeated Houston of Tennessee 48-45 earlier this season.

Quarterback Kellen Hall has been an important part of the Warriors' offensive success. In that Houston victory, he completed nearly 74% of his passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

The next challenge could be even bigger.

Oak Grove travels to Brandon on October 23 for a matchup that could have significant implications for the Region 3 standings and the Class 7A playoff picture.

After losing to Petal, Brandon will be desperate to avoid another defeat.

Oak Grove, meanwhile, has an opportunity to solidify its place among the state's elite.

Wesson Wins the Old-Fashioned Way, Shuts Out Previously Unbeaten Amite County

While offenses were running wild across Mississippi, Wesson provided a reminder that defense still wins football games.

The Cobras shut out previously unbeaten Amite County 9-0 Friday night in a Class 2A showdown.

Wesson improved to 8-0, while Amite County suffered its first defeat and fell to 6-1.

The nine-point performance represented a dramatic contrast to Wesson's recent offensive success.

The Cobras had scored 40 points against Loyd Star, 47 against Enterprise and 34 against Lawrence County in their previous three games.

Against Amite County, the offense didn't need to produce a touchdown barrage.

Wesson's defense did the heavy lifting, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard throughout the contest.

The victory strengthens the Cobras' position as one of Mississippi's most intriguing unbeaten teams entering the final weeks of the regular season.

Lake Cormorant Keeps Perfect Season Alive With 14-9 Defensive Battle

Another unbeaten team found itself in a fight Friday night.

Lake Cormorant held off Center Hill 14-9, improving to 7-0 and maintaining its position among Mississippi's undefeated programs.

The Gators scored all 14 of their points in the first half before relying on their defense to preserve the victory.

Center Hill managed a fourth-quarter touchdown but couldn't complete the comeback.

Lake Cormorant entered the week ranked No. 10 in the High School On SI Mississippi Top 25.

The Gators' ability to survive a low-scoring road test provides another encouraging sign as the postseason approaches.

With games against Saltillo, Grenada and Olive Branch still on the schedule, Lake Cormorant has an opportunity to complete an unbeaten regular season.

Oxford Survives Germantown in 27-24 Road Thriller

Oxford added another important Class 7A victory Friday night, edging Germantown 27-24 on the road.

The Chargers improved to 6-1, while Germantown fell to 4-3.

Oxford entered the season among Mississippi's most respected football programs and has continued building a résumé that includes several important victories.

The three-point win over Germantown was another test of the Chargers' ability to perform in close games.

With the Class 7A postseason approaching, Oxford remains firmly in the championship conversation.

Franklin County Breaks Hazlehurst's Heart, 35-34

Not every one-point thriller involved a Class 7A powerhouse.

Franklin County edged Hazlehurst 35-34 Friday night in another dramatic finish from the smaller-school ranks.

The teams combined for 69 points, but only one separated them when the game ended.

For Franklin County, the victory provides valuable momentum entering the final weeks of the regular season.

For Hazlehurst, it was a painful reminder of how quickly a season can turn on a single point.

Warren Central Keeps Rolling With 45-6 Rout of Greenville

While other contenders were fighting for survival, No. 2 Warren Central enjoyed a much more comfortable Friday night.

The Vikings defeated Greenville 45-6, continuing their unbeaten season and strengthening their position near the top of the state rankings.

Warren Central entered the week 6-0 after defeating Ridgeland 49-21.

The Vikings have also recorded a 42-21 victory over Madison Central, demonstrating their ability to handle quality competition.

With top-ranked Tupelo and No. 3 Brookhaven also pursuing unbeaten seasons, Warren Central remains a serious contender for the No. 1 position as the playoffs approach.

South Panola Makes Another Statement With 53-6 Victory

One of Mississippi's most storied high school football programs delivered another dominant performance Friday night.

South Panola overwhelmed Saltillo 53-6, producing one of the largest victory margins of the weekend.

The Tigers have a championship tradition that stretches back decades, and their latest victory offered another reminder of the program's ability to dominate opponents.

As the postseason approaches, South Panola will be looking to translate performances like this into another deep playoff run.

The Final Rewind

Mississippi high school football delivered almost every kind of drama imaginable this weekend.

Washington Academy survived a 126-point shootout. D'Iberville remained undefeated despite allowing 50 points. Petal and Oak Grove won one-point games in the same Class 7A region.

Wesson kept its perfect record intact with a shutout, while Lake Cormorant survived another defensive battle.

And across the state, the race toward the postseason continued to intensify.

We'll be back next Sunday with another edition of Magnolia Gridiron: Sunday Rewind, bringing together the biggest games, brightest stars and most unforgettable moments from Mississippi high school football.
