Tre Johnson, nation's No. 1 shooting guard, 'down to Baylor and Texas'

Nation's No. 4 overall prospect is taking his time with his decision

BRANSON, MISSOURI – The Link Academy basketball program had 10 seniors sign with colleges on Wednesday morning, including seven boys and three girls.

Tre Johnson, the No. 4 overall prospect in the Class of 2024, was not one of them. 

The 6-foot-6 senior shooting guard from Dallas has narrowed his decision to two finalists but he's still doing his homework on which school is the best fit.

“I’m down to Baylor and Texas right now," Johnson said. "I’m just trying to get a feel of it, trying to see different games, see their style of play and see different guys on their teams that could be me in that position.”

Both schools opened their seasons this week. 

Texas defeated Incarnate Word, 88-56, on Monday night.  

Baylor opened the season with an 88-82 win over Auburn on Tuesday and it was freshman guard Ja'Kobe Walter, a Link Academy product from Texas, who stole the show with 28 points.

Baylor and Texas both have a pair of prospects committed for next season.

Texas announced two signings on Wednesday: 6-8 forward Nic Codie from Texas and 6-5 guard Cam Scott from South Carolina. Baylor has commitments from point guard Rob Wright (Montverde Academy in Florida) and 6-8 small forward Jason Asemota.

Johnson, who scored a game-high 14 points in Link Academy's season-opening win on Wednesday night, would be the centerpiece of either school's recruiting class. 

“It’s been a very tough decision because both programs, like I really can’t go wrong with either one, so it’s seeing which one is the best fit for me myself," Johnson said.

Johnson added that he has no timetable for when he will make his decision.
