Pirates plunder to No. 5: Platte County secures back-to-back Class 5 Show-Me Bowl Championships

Platte County will look win its second straight Class 5 championship on Friday, Dec. 5.

The Pirates, winners of 27 in a row, will have the factor of proximity being in their favor with a short trip up Interstate 49 to play in St. Joseph.

Carthage, meanwhile, will have more than a 3-hour trip north for the game.

This is the first meeting between the two teams, according to the Platte County football history books, that dates back to 1907.

After earning a state championship ring last season as quarterback for Platte County and another last spring as a member of the Pirates state championship baseball team, Rocco Marriott is seeking his third ring in the past 12 months.

Marriott, the University of Central Florida commit, leads Platte County back into today’s MSHSAA Class 5 Show-Me Bowl State Championship game at Spratt Stadium on the campus of Missouri Western State University.

Spratt will be splashed in black and orange as the Pirates have only a 30 minute drive up I-29 to take on Carthage (12-1) seeking its second state championship in the past seven years.

Marriott has accounted for 64 total touchdowns this season – 52 passing, 12 rushing – with 3,270 yards passing and another 660 yards rushing for the undefeated Pirates looking for their fifth state championship all-time.

Marriott has four receivers with over 30 receptions led by senior Braiden Stevens with 1,126 yards on 59 receptions with 18 touchdowns while Wayne Baskerville (45 receptions for 736 yards) and Ty Christopher (34 receptions for 717 yards) round out the receiving corp.

Senior running back Adam Gisler has rushed for 1,059 yards and 18 touchdowns for Platte County.

Carthage is led by junior running back Landon West who has posted 1,714 yards on 244 carries with 23 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Zane Browning is a dual threat having rushed for 913 yards and 23 touchdowns and added another 1,332 yards passing with 10 touchdowns.

The Tiger defense is led by Oklahoma State signee Landon Bland.

First Quarter

Huge kickoff return by Tres Baskerville 62 yards to set up Platte County at the Carthage 33.

Rocco Marriott converts first big fourth down of the game on a 14-yard quarterback draw.

Pirates strike first on a Adam Gisler 8-yard run as he snuck inside the left pylon, Sterling Wilson PAT kick is good, 7-0 Platte County 9:16 first quarter. Pirates drive 33 yards in six plays, in 2:33.

Landon West for 10 and then 12 yards on the first two plays for Carthage and the ball just shy of midfield.

West runs for 13 for third first down and on fourth down Zane Browning catches a 13 yard pass to convert a fifth first down on the opening drive.

Second Quarter

Adam Gisler with the biggest of big runs ... breaks off tackle down the near sideline, avoids being pushed out of bounds near midfield, keeps his balance and then sprints past everyone for a 98 yard touchdown run ... Medical staff tending to Rocco Marriott who was injured on the touchdown run.

Sterling Wilson adds the PAT kick, 21-7 Pirates 9:15 second quarter ... two plays, 98 yards in 23 seconds. Three possessions, three touchdowns for Platte County.

Carthage answers with its own big play ... Zane Browning connects with Tate Nichols for 55 yards to get the ball to the Pirates 2.

The first defensive stop of the second half goes to Platte County ... after picking up one first down, the drive stalls thanks to a K.J. Stallings tackle for loss, Carthage calls timeout to discuss the fourth down and 7 at the 48 ... Browning scrambles but is pressured into an incomplete pass, turnover on downs.

Rocco Marriott struggling ... his first pass was batted up, he caught it and tried throwing it again but was penalized for an illegal forward pass. Following the penalty, Carthage gets the three and out and another defensive stop. Carthage takes over at its own 17 with under 7:30 left third quarter.

Carthage piecing together a drive ... West for 5, 8, loss of 1, then 8 more, Browning for 6 and West for 2 have the ball out to the Tiger 43.

Fourth Quarter

West for 7, Browning for 7 and then West gets a 2 yard run but a 10 yard holding penalty moves the ball back to the Carthage 46.

Screen pass Browning to West for six yards, West picks six more on a carry and then on 3rd and 6 Cole Johnson gets to West on the direct snap to create a 4th and 6 situation ... Browning connects with Carson KInder for a 10 yard catch and a new set of downs.

West for 4 and 5 yards, Browning on a two-yard keeper gets another first down.

Tigers over 30 minutes time of possession.

Carthage tries a wide receiver pass with Jack Carlton, everything was covered and Carlton scrambles for four yards ... West gets 3 and 1, bringing up fourth and two at the Platte County 12.

Browning once gets makes the play with his legs for four yards, first and goal at the Pirate 8.

Carthage wins the coin toss for a second time ... opts to be on defense first. Platte County will have the ball at the 25 to start.

Marriott to Gisler for 25 yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime ... Sterling Wilson's Jordan Brunnert blocked the extra point, Platte County 34, Carthage 28.

Tigers with the ball now.

West for 1 and 4 yards, Browning runs for 7, initially ruled a fumble, after review it remains with Carthage creating fourth down and 2.

Timeout Carthage.

Tigers attempt a pass on fourth down, Browning, under pressure has his throw fall incomplete.

Platte County holds on ... Pirates 34, Carthage 28, final in overtime.

In his final career game for Platte County, Marriott completes 10 of 17 passes for 11 yards and two touchdowns, added 42 yards rushing on seven carries with another touchdown.

Adam Gisler rushed for 122 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns and one catch for 25 yards in overtime with the game-winning touchdown.

Tres Baskerville caught three passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, Braiden Stevens caught five passes for 63 yards.

Landon West led Carthage with 124 yards rushing on 37 carries with a touchdown, Zane Browning added 65 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. Browning finished 4 of 8 passing for 84 yards.
