Photo gallery: Pitching powers Magnolia West past Argyle in 5A UIL state baseball championship
ROUND ROCK, Texas — In their first UIL Baseball State Championship game appearance, the Magnolia West Mustangs were forced to muscle their way in front during a pitchers' duel Saturday afternoon at Dell Diamond.
The Mustangs loaded the bases during the top of the sixth when senior center fielder Jackson Blank cleared the bases with a two-run single, with Blank moving up to second and another run crossing home plate after an error by Argyle.
The Eagles pieced together a two-out rally during the bottom of the seventh to bring the potential game-tying run to third base and the go-ahead run to second.
But thanks to another dominant performance on the mound by senior pitcher Caylon Dygert, the Mustangs held off the Eagles' late charge to help

Argyle (35-11-2) wraps up its 2023 campaign with the loss, which ends the Eagles' season in the UIL Baseball State Tournament for the second consecutive season.
The Eagles lost to Sinton in the 4A UIL state title game in 2022 before Argyle made the jump to Class 5A this year.
Magnolia West (36-5), meanwhile, ends a historic season with an exclamation-point finish.
The Mustangs improved to 12-1 this postseason with the victory and secured their first state championship in school history during the program's first-ever trip to the UIL state tournament.
