Venomous Snake Found Inside the Helmet of an Arkansas High School Football Player

A Maumelle player practiced for nearly a hour, unaware that a two-foot cottonmouth was hiding beneath his helmet padding until after warmups.

A routine preseason football practice at an Arkansas high school turned into an unforgettable and potentially dangerous experience when a player discovered a venomous snake hiding inside his helmet after wearing it for about one hour.

The incident occurred last Thursday during practice at Maumelle High School, where a player noticed unusual movement inside his helmet after the team finished warmups and split into position groups, according to reports from KARK-TV and NBC News.

The player immediately brought the helmet to a defensive coach, who alerted athletic director Kirk Horton. Coaches inspected the helmet and found a roughly two-foot-long snake concealed beneath the interior padding.

Venomous Cottonmouth Found Inside Helmet

Maumelle Animal Services responded to the school after initially receiving a report that the reptile was a copperhead. Once officers arrived, however, Animal Services Director Chris Davis identified it as a cottonmouth, one of Arkansas' venomous snake species.

Officials safely secured the helmet in a tote while waiting for animal control. The snake was removed without incident and later relocated to a wooded area near a river away from the school.

According to Davis, the player had been wearing the helmet for nearly an hour before discovering the snake and was fortunate not to suffer a bite.

'Shock and Disbelief' for Coaches

Horton said the discovery stunned everyone on the coaching staff.

"It really was just shock and disbelief," Horton told KARK. "I've got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years."

Despite the frightening discovery, the player was unharmed. Coaches issued him a different helmet, and he returned to practice.

Safety Message for Players

The unusual incident prompted the Maumelle coaching staff to address equipment safety during a scheduled team meeting later that day. The coaches stressed the importance of checking equipment before practices, not just for snakes, but insects as well.

The Maumelle Animal Shelter echoed that message in a Facebook post, encouraging athletes and anyone spending time outdoors to inspect helmets, shoes, gloves and other equipment before putting them on.

"Before putting on your helmet, shoes, gloves, or any outdoor gear, always give it a quick check first," the shelter wrote. "It only takes a few seconds and could prevent a very scary encounter."

Cottonmouths, also known as water moccasins, are commonly found in Arkansas and are known to seek out dark, enclosed spaces, making the helmet an unexpected hiding place.

While bizarre, the incident serves as a reminder that preseason football practices often take place during the height of snake season across much of the South, where athletes and coaches routinely encounter wildlife around outdoor athletic facilities.
