Room Service wins American Oaks at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Room Service shipped in from Kentucky and won the $350,000 American Oaks for 2-year-old fillies by 2¼ lengths at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, Room Service ran 1¼ miles on the turf in 2:01.28 and paid $6.40, $3.60 and $3 as the 2-1 second choice.

Diversy Harbor returned $6 and $4.20, while Little Journey was another neck back in third and paid $4 to show after shipping in from New York.

Nashoba's Gold, the 3-2 favorite, steadied sharply at the three-sixteenths pole and finished fifth, beaten 5 ¼ lengths.

The victory, worth $210,000, increased Room Service's career earnings to $545,565, with four wins in seven starts, including three in a row.

"It's always worth the trip when you win, and it's super weather anyway," trainer Wayne Catalano said. "I thought everything was unfolding like I expected it to. Going a mile and a quarter, I didn't think she'd get too far back. We were very happy to see the position she was in. When Shaun pulled the trigger and moved a little bit to get the jump on the horses, I thought it was a good move."

In the $200,000 Californian Stakes, Clubhouse Ride defeated 1-2 favorite Fury Kapcori by a half-length after the pair dueled to the finish line.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Clubhouse Ride ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.74 and paid $15, $4.40 and $3. The 6-year-old Clubhouse Ride won the race last year at Betfair Hollywood Park, which was closed in December.

"We had a great trip," said Talamo, who rode his third straight winner on the card. "We were a little further back than I thought we would be, but we were in a comfortable spot. He seemed to pick it up a little every eighth of a mile and when I saw Corey (Nakatani) drift out a little into Storm Fighter, I dove in there and he fought 'em off the rest of the way."

Fury Kapcori returned $2.40 and $2.10, while Majestic Harbor was another 2 ¼ lengths back in third and paid $3 to show.

The victory, worth $120,000, increased Clubhouse Ride's career earnings to $1,220,132, with five wins in 37 starts.

"This horse is as tough as they come, he's an alley fighter," winning trainer Craig Lewis said. "He comes to run. His bankroll indicates it."
