Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz, out since June 26 with a concussion, will likely begin his rehab assignment on Friday, according to a report Saturday night from Corey Seidman of CSN Philly.

The 35-year-old, who was hit in the head by a pitch against the Marlins in June, will be in Clearwater, Fla., on Sunday to spend a few days of batting practice. Assuming he suffers no setbacks, his assignment would begin just after the All-Star break. Ruiz said in the report that he would pinch hit and DH before getting behind the plate again in a game.

In 66 games this season, he is hitting .257 with a .363 on-base percentage and 15 doubles. An All-Star in 2012, Ruiz is in the first year of a three-year, $26 million deal he signed in November.

The Phillies are fifth in the NL East heading into Saturday's game at home vs. the Nationals.
