The Cubs demoted rookie third baseman Mike Olt to Triple A Iowa after Tuesday night's game against the San Diego Padres, the team announced

Olt was batting .139 with 12 home runs in 72 games this season. He was acquired last season from the Rangers as part of the deal that sent starter Matt Garza to Texas.

Olt's demotion created a roster spot for Tsuyoshi Wada, a 33-year-old Japanese pitcher who will start for the Cubs on Wednesday. Wada allowed one run over five innings in his first career major league start on July 8. He's gone 10-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 18 starts for Iowa this season.

The Cubs also promoted a pair of prospects. Centerfielder Albert Almora will go from High-A Daytona to Double A Tennessee, and rightfielder Jorge Soler will go from Tennessee to Triple A Iowa. Almora batted .283 in 89 games with Daytona this season. Soler has battled injuries but batted .415 in 22 games at Double A this season.
