The Nationals have incumbent Ian Desmond, who made the NL All-Star team in 2012, at shortstop. But third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Washington has been playing Anthony Rendon at third and Danny Espinosa at second. Cabrera played some second base in his first three seasons in the majors.

The Nationals are 58-47 and in first place in the NL East, 1.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves
