Seager leads Mariners in 4-2 win over Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Kyle Seager had another big game against the Texas Rangers.

Seager had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers on Saturday night.

Seager is hitting .362 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 69 at-bats against the Rangers this season. Overall, the 26-year-old third baseman is hitting .280 with 23 homers and 88 RBIs - all career highs.

''It's kind of all about learning,'' Seager said. ''You learn about yourself. I know what I did wrong at the end of last season. If you do something wrong, you can go back and know how to fix it.''

Seager hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to tie the score 2-2, and singled and scored in the Mariners' two-run eighth against Neal Cotts (2-9).

''He's pretty special,'' Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said of Seager. ''It's a nice feeling having him at the plate.''

Danny Farquhar (2-1) worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory, and Fernando Rodney got the last three outs for his American League-leading 43rd save.

Seattle shortstop Brad Miller, who came in with a .205 batting average, had a career-high four hits to help the Mariners move 1 1/2 games ahead of Detroit for the league's second wild card.

The game started following a rain delay of 3 hours, 13 minutes.

''It's worth the wait for a lot of reasons,'' McClendon said. ''A doubleheader (Sunday) wouldn't have been good.''

He said he spent the delay ''like everybody else, probably. I ate ice cream.''

Ryan Rua had an RBI double and scored on Michael Choice's sacrifice fly to put the Rangers up 2-0 in the fourth inning.

It was the second game for Texas interim manager Tim Bogar, who took over after Ron Washington resigned Friday afternoon.

Texas went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position, including 0 for 9 during the first three innings, en route to its eighth straight loss.

Seattle starter Chris Young went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits after lasting only two-thirds of an inning on Monday in a 12-7 loss at Oakland. The Dallas native began his big-league career with the Rangers 10 years ago and hasn't beaten Texas in three career starts.

''The guys picked me up tonight,'' Young said. ''They came back and swung the bats. It was a great team win.''

DARVISH DONE: Rangers ace RHP Yu Darvish won't pitch again this season. General manager Jon Daniels said there's no sense in bringing back Darvish, sidelined since Aug. 9 with inflammation near his pitching elbow, to make one or two starts for a team already eliminated from postseason contention. Darvish (10-7) said through an interpreter that he's disappointed that he couldn't pitch the full season but accepted the decision of the club's medical staff.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Mariners: LF Dustin Ackley left the game in the seventh inning with a jammed left ankle and is day-to-day.

Rangers: Texas plans to send INF Jurickson Profar, sidelined since March with a muscle tear in his right shoulder, to the Arizona Fall League.

The Mariners will start LHP James Paxton (5-1), who has the second-best ERA through his first 12 career starts (1.77), on Sunday. He'll go against Rangers LHP Derek Holland (0-0), making his first home start of the season and his second overall following knee surgery in January.
