Diamondbacks relief pitcher Brad Ziegler underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee on Tuesday but is expected to be ready for spring training, according to a tweet from MLB.com reporter Stever Ziegler.

The news comes as somewhat of surprise to the Diamondbacks, as the team had been hoping the injury would require arthroscopic surgery, which would've had a shorter timetable for rehab.

On the season, he threw 67 innings in 68 appearances on the mound, allowing 60 hits and 24 walks while striking out 54 en route to a 3.49 ERA.

Ziegler turns 35 next month and is due $5 million next season with a club option for $5.5 million in 2016, including a $1 million buyout clause.
