Report: Yankees OF Carlos Beltran to postpone surgery until after season
Yankees first baseman Carlos Beltran plans to wait until after the season to undergo right elbow surgery, according to a report from Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
The 37-year-old eight-time All-Star has been dealing with the pain since May and hasn't played since Tuesday. He's already received three cortisone shots and rather than opt to get a fourth he will instead attempt to play the rest of the season and then undergo the surgery. On Friday, he resumed swinging a bat, but with only a few weeks left in the regular season and no postseason in sight for the Yankees, there's no exact timetable for Beltran's return.
Earlier this week, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that if the pain doesn't "calm down" it will likely be time to shut him down. Currently in the first year of the three-year, $45 million deal, Beltran is hitting .236 with 15 home runs and 49 RBI.
The Yankees are currently third in the AL East heading into their series finale in Baltimore against the Orioles on Sunday.
