ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Martin Prado has had an appendectomy and will miss the rest of the New York Yankees' season.
Prado had the surgery early Tuesday and was placed on the 60-day disabled list.
New York manager Joe Girardi said Prado had a stomach ache all day Monday and went to a hospital after the 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay.
''Surgery was good,'' Girardi said. ''It didn't burst, which is always a big thing.''
Prado has hit .316 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in 37 games he was obtained from Arizona on July 31.
New York selected the contract of infielder Jose Pirela from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He would be the team-record 57th player to appear for the Yankees, one more than in 2013.
First baseman Mark Teixeira was out of the starting lineup due to right wrist soreness, which has been a lingering issue since the slugger had surgery on the wrist in July 2013.
''I told him to come see me when you're ready to go again,'' Girardi said.
Catcher Francisco Cervelli started after missing the previous 14 games due to headaches. Captain Derek Jeter was back in the starting lineup following a day off.
