Manager Terry Collins said before New York's game at the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night that deGrom ''understands completely'' the decision.
''One more start isn't going to bury any boats. One more start isn't going to show everybody that he belongs here,'' Collins said. ''But one more start could lead to some trouble.''
DeGrom is 9-6 with a 2.63 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 140 1-3 innings over 22 starts in 2014.
Collins also said that center fielder Juan Lagares will not need surgery for a hyperextended right elbow that has sidelined him since Wednesday.
