Grant Balfour designated for assignment by Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Reliever Grant Balfour has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The decision was announced after the Rays' 9-0 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday night. Balfour allowed three runs, one hit and three walks in two-thirds of an inning, including Chris Young's grand slam.

Tampa Bay selected the contract of right-hander Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.
