TORONTO (AP) Blue Jays star Jose Bautista strained his right shoulder trying to throw out a Baltimore batter from right field during a testy game, and he was absent from the lineup Wednesday night.
The Blue Jays said that along with missing a game against the Orioles, Bautista won't be able to play the outfield for the next few days.
Toronto manager John Gibbons said Bautista could end up on the disabled list if his shoulder doesn't improve soon.
Bautista's shoulder had already been sore for about a week before the ill-advised throw. He aggravated the injury trying to nab Delmon Young on a single in the eighth inning of Tuesday night's 13-6 romp over the Orioles.
''That's when I first said, `That wasn't the smartest thing to do,''' Bautista said.
Bautista and the Orioles have been at odds.
Along with a long-standing feud with reliever Darren O'Day, Bautista got into an argument with Orioles outfielder Adam Jones after hitting a home run in the seventh inning.
Jones felt Bautista showboated after homering, while the Toronto slugger was angry that Baltimore rookie reliever Jason Garcia had thrown behind him before he connected.
Toronto manager John Gibbons said Bautista's day-off Wednesday was strictly for the player's health and not to avoid any retribution. Even before the injury, Gibbons said he'd considered sitting him because Bautista is 2 for 29 against Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Kevin Pillar replaced Bautista in right, with infielder Ryan Goins made his first appearance of the season in left.
Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis, who left Sunday's game with bruised ribs after being hit by a pitch, returned to the lineup Wednesday.
