Watch: Cubs 2B Addison Russell gets first MLB hit with single vs. Pirates
Chicago Cubs second baseman Addison Russell got his first major league hit on Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In the top of the third, Russell hit a single to center. The young second baseman is batting ninth in the Cubs' lineup as manager Joe Maddon likes to bat the pitcher eighth.
Russell was called up by the Cubs on Tuesday and went 0-5 with three strikeouts in his debut.
Russell was drafted by the Oakland A's with the 11th pick in the 2012 MLB draft. The Cubs acquired Russell last season prior to the trade deadline for pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. The A's also got outfielder Bill McKinney and pitcher Dan Straily. Hammel is back with the Cubs and started Wednesday's game.
Though Russell has played primarily shortstop in the minors, he is starting at second for the Cubs because the team has All-Star shortstop Starlin Castro.
The Cubs also called up top prospect Kris Bryant last Friday.
Through seven innings, Russell is 1-3, and the Cubs trail the Pirates 4-1.
