Mets promote 2B Herrera from Triple-A, starts vs. Scherzer

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Mets have promoted second baseman Dilson Herrera from Triple-A and put him in the lineup against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals.

Herrera started Friday night. Left-handed reliever Jack Leathersich was sent back to Las Vegas.

The 21-year-old Herrera was hitting .370 and had scored 18 runs in 18 games in the minors.

The Mets shifted Daniel Murphy from second base to third base, and plan to keep him there until injured David Wright returns. Eric Campbell was moved to a utility role.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Herrera has some ''sock'' in his bat and his ''energy is huge.'' The Mets could also get a defensive upgrade up the middle, where they've struggled.

Herrera hit .220 in 18 games with the Mets last year.

Leathersich gave up a three-run double to Bryce Harper on Thursday night in an 8-2 loss to the Nationals. Leathersich made his major league debut this year and pitched twice.
