Red Sox star Ortiz loses appeal, serves 1-game suspension

TORONTO (AP) Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has lost his appeal of a one-game suspension for bumping an umpire and will sit out Friday night's game against the Blue Jays.

Ortiz bumped plate ump John Tumpane while protesting third base umpire Jerry Meals' call on a check swing in an April 19 loss to Baltimore.

Boston recalled first baseman Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket and put him in the lineup Friday, batting ninth. Mike Napoli is starting at designated hitter.

Shaw takes the roster spot of right-handed reliever Edward Mujica, who was designated for assignment Thursday.

Shaw is the son of former All-Star closer Jeff Shaw, who was a teammate of Red Sox manager John Farrell in Cleveland.
