Venable's big hit helps Padres beat Diamondbacks 6-5

PHOENIX (AP) Will Venable has never played in fewer than 121 games as a San Diego Padre since 2010, his first full year in the majors.

But the Padres remade their outfield in the offseason, moving Venable into a reserve role. It's one the veteran has learned to accept, and he was rewarded some for his attitude with a home run and a key hit that drove in the go-ahead run Friday night in San Diego's 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Venable homered in the second inning, and his single in the seventh off reliever Enrique Burgos (0-1) drove in Justin Upton from second base to break a 5-5 tie. The Padres bullpen made the lead stand for three innings.

''You've got to be patient, and then when the opportunity does come you can't press too much,'' Venable said. ''Everybody wants to play, but the situation is what you make it. We've got three outfielders out there that should be out there, and I understand the situation.''

Venable added a triple, scored twice and drove in two runs.

''He's such a great Padre,'' manager Bud Black said. ''His starts and his at-bats have been a little limited this year because of our outfield situation. But that was a great game for Will. That was a huge hit, obviously.''

The teams combined for six home runs, four by the Diamondbacks, who rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the score at 5 after back-to-back home runs by Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta.

Wil Myers had a career-high four hits for the Padres, including a home run in the fifth.

''I saw the ball well, was able to get back to my approach,'' Myers said. ''Just looking for a ball out over the plate and was able to put some good swings on it.''

Relievers Brandon Maurer, Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel shut down the Diamondbacks over the final three innings. Kimbrel earned his ninth save.

The Diamondbacks scored all their runs via home runs off Padres starter James Shields (4-0) who went six innings and allowed five runs and six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Goldschmidt has homered in three straight games for the second time in the All-Star first baseman's career. He and Peralta went deep in the sixth.

''It doesn't matter unless we do it. We didn't get it done,'' Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. ''We gave up the hit (to Venable) after we gave up a walk, a stolen base. ... A lot of things poorly but we still had a chance.''

Venable gave the Padres a 1-0 lead with a two-out home run in the second inning. That broke an 0-for-16 streak.

The Diamondbacks went ahead 2-1 in bottom of the inning when Chris Owings belted a Shields offering over the wall in left-center for a two-run shot. But San Diego responded on Matt Kemp's run-scoring single in the third to tie it at 2.

Arizona's Jeremy Hellickson lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs and eight hits, walking two with three strikeouts.

ALONSO TO DL, KELLEY RETURNS

Padres 1B Yonder Alonso will go on the DL with a deep right shoulder bruise, the result of an injury he suffered late in Thursday night's game against Arizona.

Alonso aggravated the shoulder, which was already sore from being hit with a pitch during the Padres' previous series at San Francisco.

Black said team doctors told him Alonso seems likely to miss at least two weeks, though it could be longer.

The Padres will call up OF Abraham Almonte from Triple-A El Paso. He is expected to join the Padres by Saturday.

Myers, who has 29 starts in center field, made his first of the season at first base in place of Alonso on Friday.

The Padres also on Friday reinstated RHP Shawn Kelley from the 15-day DL and optioned RHP Nick Vincent to El Paso. Kelley had been out since April 24 with a strained left calf.

RARE ROOF CLOSURE

The retractable roof at Chase Field, normally closed to keep out the intense heat in the desert, moved into a closed position during the top of the sixth inning with the threat of rain in the forecast. Fireworks scheduled after the game were canceled.

UP NEXT

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (1-3) makes his seventh start of the season and fifth on the road Saturday against Arizona. He will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time this season. He's 0-3 in his last three starts, the longest losing streak of his career.

Diamondbacks: Arizona's Chase Anderson faces the Padres on Saturday. He's allowed three runs or less in four of five starts this season. He is 2-1 with 3.86 ERA in his career against San Diego (four starts).
