DETROIT (AP) Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez led off Monday night's game at Detroit with a home run, one day after he was beaned by a 96 mph fastball against the New York Mets.

Gomez was hit in the left earflap by a pitch from Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard on Sunday. He and Syndergaard exchanged gracious Twitter messages afterward, and Gomez was back in the lineup Monday.

He led off with a drive to left off Detroit's Kyle Lobstein.

Before the game, the Brewers optioned second baseman Scooter Gennett to Triple-A Colorado Springs and recalled right-hander Corey Knebel.

Gennett hit .154 in 21 games for the Brewers this season, and he spent some time on the disabled list with a left hand injury.
