The Mets have designated outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment, the team announced on Tuesday. The move made room for outfielder Darrell Ceciliani, who was promoted from Triple A Las Vegas ahead of New York's game against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Nieuwenhuis, a fourth-year pro, has batted 3-for-38 (.079) this season, striking out 17 times.

The Mets announced they would promote Ceciliani, 24, following Monday's game. The left-handed hitter, whom New York drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 MLB draft, was batting .336 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 113 at-bats with Triple A Las Vegas.

Ceciliani will wear No. 1.
