White Sox shut out Astros 6-0

HOUSTON (AP) John Danks pitched an unusual shutout against the Houston Astros on Sunday.

Danks allowed 10 hits, including five extra-base hits, in the Chicago White Sox's 6-0 victory over the Astros.

According to STATS, Danks is the only pitcher to give up at least 10 hits and at least five extra-base hits in a shutout going back to 1914.

The most recent pitcher to give up at least 10 hits in a shutout was Carlos Silva on August 3, 2004, against the Angels.

''I caught some breaks,'' Danks said. ''I was really just trying to keep the ball in the ballpark and let these guys do work. It worked out.''

Chicago manager Robin Ventura made a mound visit in the bottom of the ninth to check on Danks, but left him in to finish the shutout.

''This is a tough lineup that can come back on you with the homer real quick,'' Ventura said. ''He's just a bulldog guy that keeps battling.''

With 15 to 20 friends and family in the crowd, Danks (3-4) entered Sunday with an 0-2 record and a 9.28 ERA in two starts at Houston.

He was 0-3 with a 9.15 ERA in four career starts against the Astros, but put it all behind him on Sunday.

''I hadn't had a whole lot of luck when I had family in town,'' said Danks a native Texan. ''Maybe I broke that curse, too.''

It was Danks' third career shutout and first since August 2011 against Seattle. Danks threw 118 pitches, 82 for strikes, walking one and striking out six.

Houston's Jonathan Villar was thrown out at the plate in the fifth inning as he was trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run. His shot to center sailed over Eaton's head and rolled to the wall atop Tal's Hill before he was thrown out.

In his next plate appearance, Villar doubled in the seventh inning. He was thrown out in a rundown between third base and home on Jason Castro's single. Villar also committed one fielding error on a wild throw to first base.

''We didn't do ourselves a ton of favors,'' Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. ''We just found ways enough to not score than to score.''

Danks' shutout came a day after the White Sox were blanked by Dallas Keuchel.

Adam LaRoche homered and Conor Gillaspie went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the White Sox, who won two of three against the first-place Astros.

Leading 1-0, Chicago used a three-run third inning to take a 4-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, Gillaspie singled to right, scoring Adam Eaton and Melky Cabrera. Alexei Ramirez followed by grounding into a force out that scored LaRoche.

The White Sox took an early lead in the second inning when catcher Tyler Flowers dribbled a single to center that scored Gillaspie. It was just Flowers' second RBI in his previous 20 plate appearances.

After going 0 for 5 with three strikeouts on Friday, he did not play on Saturday. Flowers entered Sunday's game with a .139 average in his previous 11 games.

Chicago went up 5-0 in the top of the sixth when Carlos Sanchez singled to center, scoring Ramirez.

LaRoche extended the lead to 6-0 with his sixth homer of the season.

Houston starter Roberto Hernandez (2-4) took his second loss in his past seven starts, allowing five runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings.

TRAINER'S ROOM

White Sox: Chicago 1B Jose Abreu sat out for a second straight day with an injured right index finger. Abreu left Friday night's game early with inflammation in the finger, but X-rays were negative. Abreu said Sunday he hopes to play on Tuesday when the White Sox visit the Texas Rangers.

Astros: Houston RP Samuel Deduno will see a hip specialist on Monday after struggling in a rehab outing with Triple-A Fresno. Deduno was expected to pitch two innings on his assignment, but only lasted one while walking four. Deduno was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 18 with a lower back strain.

FELIZ MAKES DEBUT

Houston reliever Michael Feliz, 21, made his major league debut in the ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Feliz was called up after making just one appearance at Double-A Corpus Christi following a call-up from Class A Lancaster.

After the game, Feliz was optioned back to Corpus to make room for Monday's starter Brett Oberholtzer, who returns from the 15-day disabled list (finger).

White Sox: RHP Jeff Samardzija (1-2, 3.42 ERA) will take the mound when Chicago visits the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Samardzija has struggled in road starts so far this season, as six of his seven home runs allowed have come on the road.

Astros: LHP Brett Oberholtzer (0-0, 3.00 ERA) returns from the 15-day disabled list Monday after suffering a left index finger blister. In his only start of the season on May 13, Oberholtzer pitched just three innings, allowing five hits and one run before suffering the injury. He is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two career starts against Baltimore.
