No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks just before Friday's 5 p.m. ET signing deadline.

The team announced the signing at 5:03 p.m. ET with a tweet. MLB.com's Steve Gilbert first reported the two sides were able to come to an agreement. Both MLB.com's Jim Callis and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman have reported that Swanson's signing bonus is $6.5 million.

The Diamondbacks took Swanson, a shortstop, at No. 1 out of Vanderbilt in June's MLB draft, and there were no reports on a contract until the final minutes before the deadline.

If Swanson had not signed, Arizona would have received the No. 2 pick in next year's draft as compensation. Swanson would have joined Brady Aiken (Astros, 2014), Tim Belcher (Twins, 1983) and Danny Goodwin (White Sox, 1971) as No. 1 overall picks who failed to sign contracts in wake of being selected.
