Ailing OF Cuddyer has knee re-examined, still out for Mets

NEW YORK (AP) New York left fielder Michael Cuddyer was re-examined by doctors Thursday and given a new medication for his aching left knee that the Mets hope will keep him off the disabled list.

Cuddyer was not in the lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Mets' 3-0 loss Thursday night and had started only seven of the previous 18 games.

Mets manager Terry Collins said after the game Cuddyer's visit to the doctor went well and that the outfielder was given new medication. General manager Sandy Alderson said before the game the medication Cuddyer had been taking was making him lightheaded.

Alderson said if Cuddyer had to go on the disabled list there was no guarantee the Mets would call up their top hitting prospect, outfielder Michael Conforto. The first-round pick in last year's draft was hitting .321 with five homers and 26 RBIs with Double-A Binghamton through Wednesday.

''We have to take into account his own maturity and skill set and not be bound by some of these generalities about young players,'' Alderson said. ''We're taking a lot of different things into account.''

Alderson said injured third baseman David Wright (back) will return to New York next week and begin baseball activities. Wright went on the DL on April 15. There is no timetable for his return.

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) was set to begin a minor league rehab assignment.
