MIAMI (AP) All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon was activated from the disabled list by the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, the same day that the team announced that Henderson Alvarez had season-ending shoulder surgery.
Alvarez pitched a no-hitter in 2013 and was an All-Star last year. He finishes this season 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA, and hadn't pitched since May 22. He was shut down twice with shoulder inflammation.
Marlins manager Dan Jennings says doctors found a tear in Alvarez's shoulder but did not have any other specifics, including potential recovery time.
To make room for Gordon, the Marlins put infielder Donovan Solano on paternity leave. Gordon has not played since dislocating his left thumb on July 11. He entered Tuesday ranked second in the NL in batting average (.338) and steals (33).
