New York Mets third baseman David Wright will begin his rehab assignment Monday.

New York Mets third baseman David Wright will begin his rehab assignment Monday with the High A St. Lucie Mets, reports ESPN's Adam Rubin. 

Wright will be the team's designated hitter Monday, then play third base Tuesday. 

The Mets originally placed Wright on the 15-day disabled list in April, then shut him down indefinitely in late May after Wright was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. 

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column. Symptoms include "numbness, weakness, cramping, or pain in your arms or legs," according to the National Institues of Health. Wright had developed back pain in May, disrupting his rehab from a hamstring injury.

Wright is currently in the third year of an eight-year, $138 million contract. In eight games this season, Wright hit .333 with one home run and four RBIs. 

In his career, the 32-year-old Wright is a .298 hitter with 231 home runs and 943 RBIs.
