Cardinals OF Jason Heyward pulled from game with hamstring tightness
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jason Heyward left Monday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants in the third inning with tightness in his left hamstring, the team announced.
With Heyward injured, the Cardinals are without their top four outfielders. Centerfielder Randal Grichuk was placed on the disabled list Monday with an elbow injury, leftfielder Matt Holliday remains on the DL with a quad strain and Jon Jay has been on the DL with a wrist injury since early July.
Grichuk’s injury forced Heyward to start in center on Monday for just the second time in the past two years. Tommy Pham stepped in when Heyward was injured.

Top hitting prospect Stephen Piscotty got the start in rightfield and deadline acquisition Brandon Moss started in left.
Heyward is batting .288 this season with a .782 OPS and 18 stolen bases. He has been among the Cardinals’ most durable players this season, appearing in 114 of the team’s 118 games, one fewer than Jhonny Peralta and Kolten Wong. He is the team’s most valuable player, according to Baseball Reference’s WAR.
