Reports: Indians president Mark Shapiro to take same role with Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays will name current Cleveland Indians team president Mark Shapiro as their new president, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports confirmed Heyman’s report.
Shapiro joined the Indians in 1991 and became the team’s general manager in 2001. He was promoted to president in 2010. Shapiro, 48, plans to retain Alex Athopoulos as Toronto’s general manager, Heyman adds.
The Blue Jays are seeking to replace current president Paul Beeston, who announced in January that he will retire after this season. Toronto had attempted to hire Orioles GM Dan Duquette during the winter but Baltimore refused to let him interview for the position.
White Sox VP Kenny Williams and former Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski were also connected to the Blue Jays’ opening. Dombrowski has since joined the Red Sox as their president of baseball operations.
