Ortiz hits 499th homer as Red Sox face Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has hit his 499th home run and is one shy of becoming the 27th player to reach 500 homers.

Ortiz hit No. 499 on a 1-2 pitch from Matt Moore in the first inning of Saturday night's game at Tampa Bay.

The designated hitter smacked a towering three-run shot into the right field stands for his 33rd homer this season.

Ortiz has seven homers in his last 14 games.
