Wood masterful in Dodgers' 2-0 win over Rockies

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Colorado Rockies were no match for Alex Wood.

Colorado managed just one hit against the 24-year-old left-hander in Wednesday night's 2-0 loss to the Dodgers that capped their 5-5 road trip. Wood needed only 78 pitches to get through eight innings as Colorado was still recovering from the marathon 16-inning game the night before that took 5 hours and 23 minutes to play.

Wednesday's game was done in a brisk 2:08.

Nolan Arenado acknowledged that the rain-soaked marathon the previous night could have taken something out of the Rockies' hitters. But in no way would he deflect any credit from Wood - who retired his last 19 batters and didn't walk a batter.

''That could have been part of it,'' said Arenado, who won Tuesday's game with his 39th home run. ''But at the end of the day, we still had guys who were ready to play and we just didn't do a very good job of competing.''

Kyle Parker's clean two-out single to right-center field in the second was the only hit against Wood (11-10), who struck out five. His only complete game in 64 big league starts was on April 17, 2014, when he pitched eight innings in a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia while with the Atlanta Braves.

''He was at the bottom of the zone all night,'' Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. ''He had a good changeup and a good sinking and running fastball. It's a good weapon. He got a lot of groundball outs, so we had a hard time squaring him up. He's got a lot of deception and a lot of movement.''

The last time Wood faced the Rockies, on June 12 with the Braves, he surrendered seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings.

''Wood did a really good job of controlling the game and the tempo,'' Arenado said. ''He threw a lot of strikes, and threw some pitches that looked like strikes - then just dropped right off. We didn't do a very good job of giving him a hard time. `'

Jorge De La Rosa (9-7) went the distance, allowing six hits over eight innings with five strikeouts and a walk. It was his second complete game in 217 career starts.

''De La Rosa threw the ball well - a complete game, two runs - we'll take that every time,'' Weiss said. ''When you only give up two runs, you want to win those games. But we couldn't mount anything against Wood.''

A.J. Ellis homered and rookie Corey Seager had an RBI single for the the Dodgers, whose 17th victory in 22 games reduced their magic number for clinching the NL West title to 10.

''De La Rosa was as good as ever,'' Ellis said. ''He's so unpredictable out there because he mixes his pitches so well. He just keeps you off-balance all night long with the way he changed his rhythm and his timing. And he feeds off the aggressiveness of the hitters. We were fortunate to get two runs off of him.''

Ellis opened the scoring in the second inning when he drove a 3-2 pitch into the left field pavilion for his sixth home run. He came in 0 for 10 lifetime against De La Rosa, who was 4-0 with a 3.07 ERA in his previous five starts against the Dodgers since July 5 of last season.

''I've had such poor success against him in the past,'' Ellis said. ''He's been a tough guy for me to figure out, so I kind of went into this game with no expectations - just tried to have good at-bats and hit the ball hard. Fortunately I just found a ball up in the zone and was able to put a good swing on it.''

Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 32nd save in 34 chances, allowing a two-out single by Charlie Blackmon.

Rockies: Slugging RF Carlos Gonzalez did not start, after going 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in Tuesday night's marathon and fouling a pitch hard off his right foot in the 16th inning. He pinch-hit in the ninth and struck out for the final out.

Rockies: RHP Chad Bettis (7-5) gets the assignment Friday night against San Diego in the opener of the season's final homestand, a 10-game stretch that concludes with three games against the Dodgers.

Dodgers: RHP Zack Greinke (17-3) will face Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke on Friday night in the opener of a three-game set with Pittsburgh at Chavez Ravine. Greinke leads the majors with a 1.61 ERA and .190 opponents' batting average, and is 12-1 in his last 14 starts.
