Report: Bud Black is Nats’ top managerial candidate
Bud Black is the Washington Nationals’ top managerial candidate, reports ESPN’s Jim Bowden.
Black, who met with the Nationals for a second time on Monday about the position, looks to replace Matt Williams, who was fired earlier this month.
Black managed the San Diego Padres from 2007 until his firing in June. In 2010, which was the team’s most successful season during his tenure, Black was named MLB’s manager of the year. The Padres went 90–72 that season, the last time the team finished with a record over .500.
The 58-year-old compiled a 649–713 record in his nine seasons with the Padres.
A 15-year MLB pitcher, Black recorded 121 career wins and helped the Kansas City Royals win the 1985 World Series title. He also captured a ring in 2002 with the Anaheim Angels, as a pitching coach under Mike Scioscia.
Bowden reports that Dusty Baker is the only other candidate currently vying for the position with the Nationals, who finished the 2015 season seven games behind the New York Mets in the National League East.
